The gorgeous colors of Mugilu

The gorgeous colors of Mugilu

Couple of weekends ago, while the child was in my mum’s house in Delhi for the summer vacation, me and N decided to take off on a small couple getaway. A break with just the two of us after 5 years. We didn’t really a lot of time since we were both taking a longish break in May for trip to Kufri and Delhi (and for N even beyond to Kaza and Spiti) we decided we will do only a three trip and hence began the search for places around. Being the travel lovers that we are, we had done most of the people that were coming up in searches and recos and then suddenly Cookie mentioned Mugilu, I saw the website and had a faint recollection that someone else had recoed it to me too and remembered it was Ruth. We called and booked the place without further delay. Mugilu is in Sakleshpur which is a small hilly town in the Malnad region. Mugilu is about 263kms from Bangalore and can be reached via the Bangalore-Mangalore Highway (here is the google map). Most of the roads are great apart from a small stretch where there was some construction going on and it was all dug up. When we drove through, the roads on either side were covered with flaming red flowers, sugarcane vendors in parts too, there was also a small part where the road was completely covered with a canopy of red flowers. What a site it was.

DSC_0835The other bad patch of road was the last stretch to Mugilu after taking a detour from the main State Highway, it was a mud road but the driving enthusiasts that we are we actually loved that and were zipping away flying loads some dust behind us and when we reached Mugilu we saw a sign that read “Bad roads lead to great destinations” and we were like bad roads, where? when?

yes thats us :)

yes thats us 🙂

Mugilu is a lovely place if you want to do nothing and just chill out,  read some books, take endless walks in the coffee estate exploring new leaves that are growing, the fruits and veggies they grow, some random stuff here and there.

Some lovely sights we captured during our walks

Some lovely sights we captured during our walks

There also is a pretty big meadow just behing Mugilu where you can take well some more walks, what we did there apart from taking walks was try our hands at some drifting. An open meadow, a car that can catch speed, no traffic its a perfect recipe for drifting 🙂

Mugilu2

Beyond the meadow if you keep walking is a small stream around which we can take some more walks. I am told there is a fort and a church that are close by and should or can be visited but we were a lazy couple in that holiday and did nothing of that sort.

Mugilu3

Mugilu is run by a very sweet couple Sapna & Chandan who are from Bangalore too but moved to Sakleshpur some years ago in search of a quieter life, what they are doing almost seems like the dream I had retiring in peace in the hills while I am young, just that they have taken the plunge while I have not. We spent a lot of time with them talking about just anything that we would fancy from the planters club and how people behave there to how fireflies would take over Mugilu in June (next year I am so going there to check that out) to food and how they get around buying that property.  During our chats it turned out that Chandan & Sapna enjyong offroading too and own a jeep for that and that made the conversations much more interesting 🙂 The food at Mugilu is lovely too, fuss free local cuisine, I loved the akki rotis and chicken curries that I eat there.

Shunti - The dog at Mugilu, we so fell in love with her. She accompanied us to all our walks :)

Shunti – The dog at Mugilu, we so fell in love with her. She accompanied us to all our walks 🙂

Another thing that is lovely about Mugilu is that it is a pet friendly homestay, while we were there, there actually was a family that had come with a pet of their own dog which was happy being there and making friends with Shunti but couldn’t get along with the other dog they had because of which we couldn’t get around making friends with him

While you are in Mugilu one thing you should not miss is the sunset, gorgeous colors

DSC_0973In short, I recommend Mugilu to everyone who wants to do a short do nothing vacation a short drive away from Bangalore and they tell me its gorgeous while it rains

Case in point here North East, I realized I have my travelogue of Sikkim half done so I thought I might as well take up with this opportunity to complete it

I gave you an overall brief of things or shall we call it preview of things in the last post, the next day (technically Day 2 but practically Day 1 since we reached Sikkim only in the evening) started with all the presentations from the bloggers who attended the event. I was amazed at the vast variety of experience covered, while Arun’s and Vishal’s pictures kept us spell bounded, Mridula’s determination for making it to Everest Base camp inspired us and Priya she had me stunned with the idea of who she collected funds for her Antarctica travel. Listening to Rakhi talking about her solo backpacking in India was when the idea of solo backpacking which I am gonna do soon was seeded in my head. So after spending half a day in the conference room and actually feeling good about it we decided to go visit the famous shiva mandir in Baiguney, when we went it was fully covered in fog but still was a sight

The City of Everlasting Love – Agra

Agra, Delhi, Highway tales, highway travels, on the road, road trip, taj mahal, travel, travel tales, Yamuna Expressway

While we were in Delhi this time during our crazy and epic drive, me and sister thought we should also may be drive out with the family for a day, someone mentioned the new Yamuna expressway and the plan was freezed in like two seconds, yes we are mad enough to get excited about being on road after 2500kms+ 3 drive too…

The expressway starts from Greater Noida and has only one entry, we stay in Rohini and thats like the other end of the town and it took us about 1.5 hours that too at 7:30 am in the morning just to reach the expressway start but we were able to find it pretty easily thanks to my most treasured thing when driving. Yes you guessed it right I am talking about google maps 😉 How I love that app on my phone and one of the reasons I haven’t upgraded my phone to iOS6 is because I will lose google maps…but as usual I digress..

Once we were on the expressway, it was delight through and through. Cemented 3 (infact I think 3 and half) lane roads, barricaded on both sides. We were constantly cruising at 150. At one point of time, hubby even mentioned this is so smooth and good, I am almost getting bored. The only sad thing about the roads was the fact that they were so deserted. I mean I think we saw just 50 cars on an almost 150km+ expressway. Ofcourse we weren’t complaining on the lack of traffic but we were worried that if its not used, it won’t be maintained well in the longer run.

What I also liked about the expressway is the fact that after every toll plaza (and there are three of them) there is a pit stop, a small quick eating joint and very clean loos, there is a janitor always standing there who cleans it just after u use. Hopefully this will continue as the usuage of the expressway increases too. We had breakfast on one such pit stop, took bread pakoras, veg puff and stuffed kulchas and eat it on the car along with hot tea

That's my mum, younger sister and O enjoying our breakfast

That’s my mum, younger sister and O enjoying our breakfast

After the quick breakfast stop, I took over the wheel from N and enjoyed the drive till Agra and I tend to agree with him after the 3 days of drive this did feel boring essentially because it was so smooth 😉 Like he says we needed a better car, a car that can take us to 200kmph may be and give that trip (Warning : The whole road is cemented and not tarred and there is a greater risk of tyre bursting which can be a huge risk at high speeds. Please use caution while speeding. We have all terrain tyres in our car which we fill with Nitrogen and hence the risk is lower)

We made it to the outskirts of Agra City including the breakfast break in under 2 hours after entering the expressway. What happened after we entered the city is another story though. My heart pains to say that roads of Agra are narrow, broken and dirty which is such a contrast from expressway that it hits you right into your face 😐 After traversing through those lanes and struggling with directions (yes google maps came to rescue again), Can u beat it there are not many sign boards guiding to Taj? It’s supposed to be a wonder of the world I thought, we did reach Taj Mahal parking somehow. The child saw the camel cart there and wanted to take a ride in one of those. So from parking to Taj was done in that and we all had fun like a child

DSC_0153

When we reached the ticket counter, I was ready for another shock. No one wanted to follow queues, garbage was strewn all around. It was shocking to see that this was the state of affairs just outside Taj, one of India’s most important and popular tourist destination. It made me realize that why do all people have the image of India that they do. People were eating chips, throwing packet on the road when there is a dustbin right next to it and the security guards standing there will say nothing too. Food isn’t allowed to be taken inside the monument and its stated on a lot of boards but people were still taking it and there was a huge bunch of discarded things lying next to the entrance because of that which includes discarded melted ice cream, imagine the mess it would make. Taj is a monument of pride for me, for me visiting it fills me with joy and happiness that its in India, I wonder why do people not feel the same?

The minute you enter the premise the scene changes though and what you witness is impeccable lawns, clean and tidy and oh so gorgeous. When you look at Taj, even with so many people around you know there is indeed something special about it

Borrowing my friend Tara's words to describe this picture - e lilliputian crowd, the bird in flight and the blue color

Borrowing my friend Tara’s words to describe this picture – the lilliputian crowd, the bird in flight and the blue color

Unfortunately I couldn’t get around clicking pictures as I would have wanted, too many people, tried parents and a hungry and cranky child aren’t things that can let you pursue a hobby 🙂 So we exited Taj after a quick round of the monument.

One of the four side forts surrounding the Taj

After seeing Taj we headed for lunch to Ram Babu Paranthas (read the post linked here on the food blog for delicious Agra food tales) where we had a yummy lunch, following which we headed to Sadar Bazaar for a little shopping. After all what trip is complete without having to see what the city offers to its shoppers 😉 We picked up a bag, some footwear and so as Agra is also famous for its leather. We also visited Meena Bazaar and picked up a gorgeous marble mortar and pestle and some coasters.

Post all this when we saw the time it was already 5:00 pm and hence the plan to visit Fatehpuri Sikri had to be ditched 😦 and we started our journey back which was largely uneventful and the same kind of drive. We reached back home at 21:28 after clocking 508kms on road.

PS: this is my third post as a part of Marathon Bloggers, we are posting one post a day, Wanna join us ? here is the FB group

Last month I was invited to Club Mahindra’s CONCLAY at Baiguney, Sikkim to meet other bloggers, travelers and talk about travel, food, pictures and more. Now what’s not to be excited about an opportunity like this, North East has been in my must visit to places since a long time and this combined with an opportunity to interact with other people who are ace in their respective fields, the outstanding photographers in Arun and Vishal, the travelers and much respected travel blogger Mridula, Priya who recently went to Antarctica with Sir Robert Swan and Rakhee who has backpacked in India alone.

The Conclay Team

With people so accomplished, topic as travel and destination as beautiful as Club Mahindra’s new resort I knew the next three days were going to be bliss.

Club Mahindra’s property in Baiguney

After half a day of travel when we saw the north eastern lush green hills and the resort tucked in the middle of them, I just knew why everyone who goes there comes back smitten

Only time work can be pleasure 🙂 Saurabh and Akshat from Club Mahindra making sure we have a good time

These were the views from room. When one has views like this even people like me can get up early 🙂

Waking up to views like this with Darjeeling tea.. Isnt this what is bliss

The pathway to heaven errr the resort

My favorite part of the room, I can sit here for hours and read

So here is a preview of what I will show u of sikkim in the next few days to come, stay tuned 🙂
PS: thanks to all of you who extended a warm welcome to me in the last post… trying to be back u see

Continued from here and here

So next morning alarms were set at 5am, bets in place that who will get up and who will not and the odds were highly against me but I was determined to prove them wrong and I think I got up just to prove them wrong 😛

So we were at the beach around 5:45 or so, with the weather just perfect to play around…. we enjoyed and overcome our fears, much fun was had playing in water, sand, feeling the sand slip away under the feet and making castles 😀 all the while when it was drizzling a bit making it even more fun… sigh beach is the only thing that makes me feel damn jealous about chennai ;P

Beach Fun

After spending around an hour and a half on the beach we all were hungry and the plan was to eat at Murugan Idly the place I start dreaming about the minute we start talking about a Chennai trip… We rushed to murugan idly only to be told that it opens at 8am for breakfast, disappointment is a small word for what I felt at that time I assure u 😦 however because I had one more day for eating that breakfast and we were hungry anyways P took us to hot chips, now that was a surprise as I didnt know that hot chips will sell idly dosa also. The hot chips here in Bangalore sell just what they are named for Hot chips and yummy ones too…. this hot chips had anything but chips 😉 the breakfast was decent though we thulped idly dosa, a dose of filter coffee and planned the rest of the day ahead while eating which was to proceed towards Mahabalipuram known as mahabs is what I am told 🙂

So after coming back home and scrubbing the sand away and making ourselves presentable we started on the drive towards mahabs on the ECR road of which I had heard so much about… and yet again all we encountered was crazy traffic, till quite sometime it did ease out when we crossed the toll booth a little though… the idea was to just decide if we want to stop somewhere on the way and see, if we dont find anything interesting we would head straight to mahabs, however the first stop came too soon – the snake and the crocodile park thinking ojas might enjoy the place… however it left me in pain just as most zoo’s in India too, apart from a couple of the like the Mysore zoo I always leave Indian zoos with a very heavy heart. This place was badly maintained, not clean at all, with tiny enclosures and the worst was the snake enclosure, they had placed the snakes in pots covered with a cloth, taken out randomly for display and hit nudged by a stick to fan so that the people there can get bribe tips

Having said that ojas did enjoy seeing all the crocs, for him the state doesn’t matter too much as of now I guess. There were also some turtles in the glass enclosures which he loved the most.

The aligators

Inside the snake park

There were also some nice and cute turtles in park, which excited ojas the most…. he refused to get away from them 🙂 so after seeing this and indulging in some pineapple with a generous sprinkling of red chillies we headed straight towards mahabs enjoying the lovely view on both sides of ECR

To be continued….

PS: can’t believe I am writing so much about chennai 😛

chennai, chennai chronicles, highway travels, NaBloPoMo, travel

We had been planning this Chennai trip forever and by forever I mean forever for multiple reasons N’s uncle who is almost like a father to him since N lived with him during all his schooling, wanting to show Ojas chennai, wanting to experience the brilliant chennai road in the Cedia and for my love-hate relationship with the city (more on that in the next post and yes that will be the post for u Pal :p) but somehow it just kept getting delayed and delayed and further delayed because we’ll think of doing in it winters and something will come up and later in march we would say naa its too hot now so this time we decided enough is enough we must go this time whatever happens we must. So phone calls were made to cousins and uncles, to some friends and off we started early morning a little after 6:15 or so, all backs packed and loaded, ojas buckled into the car seat, the windscreen cleaned and shining, juices and munchies loaded off we started with a lovely weather accompanying us, we secretly praying that we could pack the weather in the boot and take it along too 🙂

The idea was to zip across and cross hosur before 7am at any cost however God and my husband had different plans, as soon as we reached the toll booth N realized that he has left his wallet home, we pay a round trip toll and take a u-turn and thak go back home to collect the said wallet, poor N to his credit he has never done it before and on the way tried to drive as fast as possible to save time. Anyways by the time we started from home again it was some 7:10 and the trip-o-meter was set back to 0, we reached the poll gate and paid it one more time and headed again. The drive till hosur was pretty crowded and it felt that whole of Bangalore is headed that side for the long weekend… we reached Hosur (38kms) at 7:46, thought of catching a breakfast but somehow didn’t feel like stopping so close to home 😛 the hosur-krishangiri stretch is a pretty decent one, The roads are good but there is quite a bit of traffic and we made it to Krishangiri (87 kms) at about 9 am in the morning. And just after krishanagiri we decided to fuel up as well as catch up on breakfast, there was a MacDonald and Krishna bhawan at the bunk but guess what the krishna bhawan had some 25 minutes waiting and had run out of idlies, this on the highway so Bangalore was indeed headed out, we decided to grab something from the drive in of macD and eat on the go, though the drive in was not really working well instead of three counters for ordering, paying and collecting there was one window where he was making everyone halt and place the order in the main counter inside… what will it take for us to do things right? small things like that? so the new spicy chicken and spicy paneer burgers were sampled and duly passed as better than the earlier ones 🙂 and post krishangiri we took a left turn towards Chennai whereas the straight goes towards Salem etc

And this is when we found joy because the roads were relatively very empty post this turn and very very good, I think only fools like us holiday in Chennai that too in the end of April 😉 We started zipping away happily cruising at good speeds, reached yellore (160kms) at 9:51, vellore (206) at 10:21 and finally chennai outskirts (322 kms) at 11:50 and that is where it started damn the traffic jam…. from there to reach our cousin’s house we took about 1 hr and 2 mins for a distance of about 15kms … sigh traffic everywhere is the same I guess..

Incredible India | Post 5

india, NaBloPoMo, states, tag, travel

No No don’t judge because I have taken up a tag on just the 5th day, I did it because part of my plan is to clear the many many drafts I have in dashboard and this was the one that was itching to get finished from a long time, so here is the Incredible India tag picked up from Bikram’s blog(I think swaram also did it once but I cant find the link to it) The rules are:

1. The list contains all the states of India and their capitals are in brackets. 2. Make bold the states you have visited, and mention your favourite memories of that state. 3. Include only states that you have really experienced, and have felt the culture of the place. The touch-and-go while travelling in a train does not count, because that way I believe I’d have seen a little more, but it does not give me a feel of the place and so they need to be actually visited.

1. Jammu & Kashmir (Jammu/Srinagar): 😦 is the only thing that can show my mood on the fact that I haven’t visited this one. I have gone to Jammu (actually thats also the capital no? the winter capital) many many times but still have to visit Srinagar… one day it will happen one day

2. Punjab (Chandigarh): aah many times and I have many many memories associated to this one, playing in my bua’s small house on the outskirts of Chandigarh with a well near by and getting totally excited on drawing the water out of the well. running out madly in the empty space behind. Going to the posh markets of chandigarh, seeing the lovely pinjore gardens and finally the boating in sukhna lake holding the BF’s hands 😉

3. Haryana (Chandigarh): well see above will work? 😛

 4.  Himachal Pradesh (Shimla) : 50% of my summer vacation holidays were spent in shimla 😛 because we would ask mom-dad to take us somewhere please and having people we know in chandigarh they would find it so much easier to take us to shimla. It used to be a nice quaint little hill station (unfortunately spoiled a lot by tourist now) and have many lovely memories in that place again but the one that stands out most are the lovely times we have had on the small toy train ride from Kalka to Shimla… it goes through many tunnels and drives so slowly that one can get down, walk and get in again enjoying every moment of the ride, every view that u see and ofcourse as kids screaming each time one enters the tunnel 😀

5. Uttaranchal (Dehradun): My maternal uncle my mamaji was posted in Dehradun for quite some time so we have spent some summer vacations packed up in their house, used to be lovely the weather much better than the scorching delhi heat and the plus point was yummy dehraduning litchis… god how many litchis we have had in that summer and there was a litchi tree in the house that mamu was staying and one day we all climbed the tree and plucked as many litchis as we could and eat all of those in the drive back to Delhi….

6. Rajasthan (Jaipur): I have visited Jaipur many a times, the same mamu who was posted in Dehradaun after some time was posted in Jaipur and Ajmer (bank job u see) but the time which I have the fondest memories of is of the time I went to Jaipur during my induction. Fresh out of college, some 30 of us (may be more) were packed off to Chowki Dhani (which 10 no wait 12years ago was a fairly new resort and concept and u dare not call me old ok :P) for a week and one can well imagine what would have come out, can’t u? Trainings in the day and fun in the night till very late night damn those were days….

7. Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow): another city I am dying to see, for the nazakat, the kebabs, lucknowe chikan work and ofcourse our D 😛

8. Bihar (Patna)

9. Jharkhand (Ranchi)

10. West Bengal (Kolkata): can u beat that I haven’t been to Kolkata like ever….sigh comeon my dear bloggers in kolkata invite me for a dahi maach meal

11. Orissa  (Bhubaneswar) : I am starting to realise I have seen so little of India… and this is the hometown of my brother in law, must ask him to take me there soon

12. Sikkim (Gangtok) : yet again in my must to do list

13. Arunachal Pradesh (Itanagar)

14. Assam (Dispur)

15. Tripura (Agartala)

16. Nagaland (Kohima)

17. Mizoram (Aizawl)

18. Manipur (Imphal)

19. Meghalaya (Shillong)

the whole of north east is a untouched territory for me 😦

20. Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal) : going there during a transit and stopping for a fresh hot meal counts?

21. Chattisgarh (Raipur)

22. Gujarat (Gandhinagar) : Oops I always thought ahemdadbad is gujrat’s capital ok just did a little google and well they are almost the same 😉 so I will count this one as done and the memory very recently done full gujju meal… what food man and what service and what a way of making chappatis

23. Maharashtra (Mumbai): A city I have done many times again my uncle stays there and I have enjoyed many a evenings on the beach there with the warmth and love of my uncle…. and there was a time we me and N used to visit the city every weekend for 2 months as N’s aunt was getting treated for cancer and have some dreadful memories of the city from that time 😦 and to the recent trip where I totally enjoyed the mumbai street food

24. Goa (Panjim):  AAah my most favorite vacation destination in the whole world… there is nothing that can beat Goa nothing. Me and N have drove to Goa once, I have had a week long vacation in Goa with friends during college and most recently I have done a girls only trip to Goa, enough shopping has been done in Goa, enough lazing at the beach with loads of beer and a book, roaming about the whole city on the rented bike, para sailing, speed boats and what not…… and yeah the first time I went to Goa was when I was 8 I think 😉 a place close to my heart a place where I can go any number of times… there is something about the very air of Goa that makes one happy

25. Andhra Pradesh (Hyderabad ): another place in my must visit I know I see someone frowning yet again ;(

26. Tamil Nadu (Chennai) : A strange city, I hate when I think of it, I love it when I am visiting and a city I know I can never settle in but a city I always have fond memories of from my visit… be it thulping idlies like nobody’s business or enjoying the beach but the fondest memory has to be the one when Ojas got over his fear of water in the beach this time. I felt so happy proud and relieved

27. Karnataka (Bengaluru): well well well what can I say, a City a girl came to about 9 years ago thinking she will go back her Delhi after 2 yrs… a city that I hate a lot about a city that I love a lot about, a city where I found many many lifelong friends, a city where I found the love of my life, a city where I married, a city where I became a mother a city which I have started to call home and which will be home forever I think. This is my city and a city I am proud of dispite everything

28. Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram) : Kerala is not called God’s Own Country for nothing it really is and my memory of kerala visit are so nice specially kochi as we had a lovely homecooked breakfast in kochi’s at a friends place

29. Delhi : another well well well, when u have spent almost 25 yrs of life in a city you need a novel to list down your best memories not a post 😉

And phew that brings us to the end of it… here all my fellow NaBloPoMo’s considered urself tagged… I am giving ur fodder for a post and me I am sending to N so that he can plan our next trip 😛
