Its a strange and weird time when your childhood icons start passing away. Ghazal Maestro Jagjit Singh passed away day before yeseterday. For me an era ended with him, many many evenings were spent listening to his soulful healing music. Soaking myself into the lyrics that he brought life too. His was one of the music that I grew up on, its a music thats in my soul. Music that will last me a lifetime and in my memories and his music will live the maestro forever. Rest in Peace the ghazal maestro

Today as a dedication to him let me present to you the top 10 ghazals (actually the first ten may be) which are my favorite… ten on tuesday on wednesday anyone?

So the sake of situation lets start with a song which makes most sense here Jeewan kya hai chalta phirta ek khilona hai

And a song we all grew up a song that symbolises him, yes woh kagaz ki kashti yeh baarish ka paani

Next up a ghazal that has lovely nuinaces in it, kal chaudavi ki raat this shab bhar raha charcha tera

Next is a a ghazal which I love for the sheer magic of its lyrics,

Gulshan ki faqt katoon se nahin phoolon se bhi zeenat hoti hai., jeene ke liye is duniya main gham ki bhi zararoot hoti hai

No list about Jagjit Singh can be complete without mentioning the magic he did to Mirza Ghalib poetry… dil hi to hai, Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi

Can anyone forget the magic he created with Insight, specially with Garaj baras pyaasi dharti ko phir paani de maula

He also sang many geet/ghazals in Punjabi…Β  here is one that I love to listen too Saun da mahina

He also sang a lot of devotional songs.. here are two – a shabd (punjabi bhajan sang in gurudwara)

and the ever famous hey ram hey ram hey ram

And here’s ending with my most favorite Jagjit Singh ghazal, the one that never ever fails to evoke emotions, make me teary eyed… touch my heart somewhere… babul mora naihar chhooto jaye

So tell me whats your favorite

So turns out it was the queen of heart’s birthday yesterday yes yes I am talking about Madhuri Dixit. The queen who still looks every bit charming (can she please change her designer though πŸ˜‰ )

So today morning when I was driving RadioOne was playing Madhuri’s top 10 songs according to them and they made me so nostalgic took me back to my school and college time really loved listening to all those songs so I thought I will do my personal top 10 favorites of Madhuri in no particular order πŸ™‚

So lets start with the song that made Madhuri what she is, which made Madhuri Madhuri… the song that taught us counting πŸ˜‰ Ek do teen

Payal meri tumko bulati ha, so seductive, so sexy and what a couple anil and madhuri formed, my heart seriously wants to see togther on screen again

while on Anil and madhuri can anyone ever forget this song from beta? dhak dhak…. lots of hearts have gone dhak dhak ever since

The young and angry Madhuri in this one was the perfect person to stand against Aamir in this one and remember what wave this song had made beause it was added to the movie,oh the stunts they used to do in those days πŸ˜‰

Kangana Kanagana from Lajja, god the way she moves…badi mushkil baba badi mushkil

Choli ke peeche kya hai, choli ke neeche πŸ˜‰ How can one talk of Madhuri songs and not talk to this one, aah the controversy it created and aah so well

Chane ke khet, that step I have spent many evening trying to perfect it πŸ˜‰ and she made even SRK bearable *bring on the bricks its ok*

Mera Piya Ghar aaya, a song I loved before she danced on it and a song I loved even more after πŸ™‚

Its no easy feat to match up to Prabhu Deva while one is dancing, that man doesnt have a bone in him, but this woman did manage it. And I bow to her for that

And in the end for me the best ever Madhuri song ever, there is something about this song that makes stop blinking everytime I see it… I dont think anyone could have carried this song like she did

So what are your favorite madhuri dance nos… I am also tempted to do a top 10 romantic songs of madhuri…. while I was jotting these many many came to my mind πŸ˜€

books, fun, movies, music, tag

I have been having a bit of a writers block… inspite of having so much to write can get to write anything so when I saw this on Preeti’s blog I thought may be it will break it πŸ™‚

So here are the rules

1.The tag has three parts..Movies,Music, Books/ Authors.
2.Write a movie, book and author with each alphabet of your first name. The book, movie or song should be one that you really liked. If you say why itΒ  matters to you, it would be great! We will all discover new songs, movies and books this way.
3.Tag as many people as there are letters in your name. (if your name has 4Β  letters, you have to tag 4 people and so on)
4.Mention that the tag originatedΒ here and link back to this post πŸ™‚
5.Copy paste these rules πŸ™‚
My Name – everyone knows Monika….
Movies

Meet the Parents – I just love the movie and its one of those movies I can see over and over again
Omkara – I think one of the best adaption of a book ever. Vishal Bhardwaj is a star and I think every one in that movie acted just brilliantly
Notting Hill – Its a totally awwww inducing movie isn’t it?
Ishqiya – So clearly see a Vishal Bhardwaj fan here… πŸ™‚ I think this was the first movie in which I thought its possible that anyone can over shadow Naseer but both Vidya and Arshad did… and what songs love them
Kings Speech – Saw it recently and I think it was lovely
A Beautiful Life – The movie (as well as the book) moved me even motivated me… lovely
Music

Michael Jackson – there was none like him, there will be none like him πŸ™‚
O P Nayyar the music director who used to weave magic
N…. yes yes I am talking about my hubby I love it when he sings… πŸ™‚ go awww now
Iktara – goonja sa hai koi iktara… a song which I have loved for the longest time ever…..
Killing me softly with his song….Β Struming my pain with his fingers ,Β Singing my life with his words, Β killing me softy with his song, Β telling my whole lifeΒ with his wordsΒ killing me softly with his song… how romantic andΒ Roberta FlackΒ absolutely rocked this mushy number
Asha Bhosle – I love her love the verstality and some how I have always loved her more than Lata

Books
Mahabharata – I dont think there is a book like that anywhere else… Palace of Illusions is my favorite book, I am reading Jaya next and now I am on a mission to read it every version and adaptation of that possible πŸ™‚
One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest – A book I can read any number of times
Namesake by Jhumpa Lahri – I think this was the first book I read of hers and quite liked it
Interpreter ofΒ Maldies…. I actually didnt like it too much but cant think of anything else right now πŸ™‚
Kite Runner – A story which touched me deep and left a mark forever
Amitav Gosh – My most favorite India Author, what story he weaves by the way when is the second one his trilogy come, the one next to Sea of Poppies?
I loved doing this, the names I have mentioned might or might not be my most favorite I just wrote what came to my mind without thinking much πŸ™‚
And anyone who wants to do this please take it up

Rains make me happy…

Rains sometimes make me sad too…

Rains make me nostalgic…

Rains make me musical…

Rains bring out the romantic in me like no other times…

Rains also bring out the foodie in me like no other times…

Rains makes me love the smells that are around…

Rains make me want to dance…

Rains make me want to love…

I love rains…

They make me myself….

So when I saw this post my Pixie, I couldn’t help but whisking it away πŸ˜‰

The earliest of my rain memory is not really a memory but a collection of the rain times when we were really small in school and if u were in Delhi than you would know that when it used to rain it use to rain like crazy… sometimes days all together… and we used to wait for that because that would mean no school and endless time making boats and letting them float in the endless water streams that would have come up in ever y corner…. because that would be mean the yummiest of pakoras and halwas made by granny… the freshly roasted bhutas but lots of lemon and masala we would eat…. endless getting wet in rain and then catching a cold and later in the night getting a scolding from mom along with the yummy besan seera served in bed to cure the cold… those were the days

We grew old, school turned into college and with that started our regular travel in DTC buses… gosh anyone in delhi would agree to how horrible they are… but ok I am digressing once again… so on the way from our college was a chat-wallah a very famous chat wallah… the one who sits outside UPSC… yes I see all delihities nodding here πŸ˜‰ so one afternoon it was raining and some 5 of us decided to get down from a direct bus to eat that chat… and there we stood getting drenched in rain and eating papdi-chat, gol-gappas and what not and then we decided to walk upto India Gate all the while getting wet in the rain…What fun was had and when we finished admiring India Gate and chatting we were so soaked that even auto wallah’s refused to take us home πŸ˜‰

Then when I went ahead to do my PG from a college in Ghaziabad, we were located outside the city and I used to daily up-down from delhi to Ghaziabad in those ALT buses… and then take those 8-wheeler fatfatatis if anyone knows what I am taking about and just when u were reaching the outskirts of the city was our college with nothing but a small shack selling tea, bread pakoras and samosas to us every hungry souls and like all shacks it had a tin roof… and every time I would rain our gang would bunk class and have tea and bread pakoras endlessly there… the soft splutter of the rain on tin would be visible… with a high tea we would keep on playing some stupid game or the other or just chat away… what fun college days are….

Phew I don’t know whether I should put this one up here, its a memory I have with ex but than just because they have become ex now doesn’t make the memory any less dearer isn’t it? or just because they have become an ex the memory doesn’t get wiped away from the brain… So the ex and me used to work in same office and one day he had brought his bike to work, and we were going back home together and it started raining most unexpectedly… and raining really heavy, we were drenched in like 2-3 minutes and then we took refuge in one road side dhabha and hot cup of steaming chai all the time lost in that butterflies in the stomach feeling… the feeling that only a person in love can understand, we were there in that place for abour 45 minutes till the rain slowed down, we drank some 4 cups of tea and by the time we went to pay the bill… the dhabha owner in very filmi style told us “are bachon sahi hai romance chalo rakho… tum logon ko dhekh ke hamein meri jawani yaad gayee… tumse main paise nahin loonga”… we had to really force him to take money for those cup of teas really…

And after some time I moved to blore and rains became a regular affair but still so dear… I remember me and N had just started going around and I was going to meet some of his friends for the first time and that evening it was raining really heavily just as it does in june-july in bangalore…. N had come to pick me up in his car but it was parked a little far away and I had just one umbrella at home… I still remember the way we walked together under one umbrella…N’s arm around me tightly to give me a hold and make me feel better… lovers under one umbrella is not over-rated trust me on that πŸ˜‰

Another rainy day which is going to stay with me for a long long time now is the wet sunday we had recently… introducing Ojas to paper boats was so much fun…

Gosh I have so many memories with rain I could go on and on and on… like the one with Iya recently where we had calcutta rolls in a rain, or with a friend P when we had ice cream in rain, or here when we had besan chillas on a lovely evening after rains… so what are your favorite rain memories? and did u notice that every memory of me has the mention of some food in it πŸ˜‰

PS: u need proof of my love on rains see I did a post on rain songs last time I did NaBloPoMo too… and search rain on my blog to see how many posts come up πŸ˜‰

Papa Kahtein hai bada naam karega

music, songs

The Mad Momma did a collection of songs from 90’s that she is embrassed that she liked πŸ˜‰ and it took me back in time, remembering all the evening and afternoons when we were in school and college and used to play the music on the small tape recorder that I had… what fun it was… though most of the songs when u hear them now… u go like what? but what a rage they were than… and dear MM i am talking about Delhi no small town so its all the same everywhere πŸ˜‰ when it comes to crazy music teenagers all across India are the same.

So here goes my list of music that I still remember enjoying… ofcourse it was a tough task considering she had already covered most that I wanted to… every song mentioned there is here in this list haan πŸ˜‰ but still as she there are plenty of embarrassing songs left πŸ˜‰

Who can forget the fresh young aamir khan so handsome, so cute singing Papa kahte hain in a movie which changed the course of Indian Cinema… bring on the young mushy romance….I know its a song for guys but all u girls out there tell me truly didn’t us all want to be the girl that he sings about in the last para…

mera tou sapna hai ek chahra dhekhe jo usko jhume bahar…

gallo main khilte kaliyoon ka masaum

hothe main jaado aankhoon main pyaar

banda ye khoobsoorat kaam karega

dil ki duniya main aapna naam karega

meri nazar se dhekho tou yaaroon ki meri manzil hain kahan

gosh I still remember the lyrics by heart πŸ™‚ I think I still remember each song of the movie word by word

And then came Maine Pyar Kiya who took QSQT’s legacy forward and also created the never ending khan clash πŸ˜‰ and another movie whose songs were there on every young person’s mind and like MM mentioned no antakshri completed without having the full sequence in it…. but if there were two songs I went head over heels with in this movie…

the first one… main ladki hoon, tum ladke hoon…. how silly but how cute… ki aaya masuam dosti ka πŸ™‚Β  and yeah ho forget that this is the movie and song which invented the famous dailouge.

Frienship main no sorry, no thank u

and

dosti ki hai nibhani tou padegi hai

and there was Mere Rang main range walli… which re-defined the sexiness… gosh I used to dream of that song and a BF as sexy as salman πŸ˜‰ the way he moves in this song… to die for

Next up is Mohini mohini mohini… main I still remember the crazy number of hours I have spent with this song in a closed room trying to copy every step of madhuri

and dont laugh when I tell u that I have probably spent equal number of hours imaging Anil singing this song.. kahdo ki tum ho meri warna πŸ˜‰ they formed a sexy on screen couple isnt it?

and u cant talk about anil and madhuri and not talk about the landmark.. dhak dhak karne laga

and while we are talking about Anil how can we forget the magic he created with Sridevi…

Does anyone remember Ronit Roy? yeah the same who became bajaj in Kasuati Zindagi Ki… he actually did a movie “Jaan Tere Naam” if anyone recalls… there was a phase when I was all over those songs… πŸ™‚

And do u guys remember a guy called Kishan Kapoor… yeh yeh acha sila diya tune mere pyar ka guy… but somehow that song never sat in my head… it was a song from another disaster called Aaja Meri Jaan that stuck with me like fevicol…

and another jewel from the movie – it even talks abt bathing and changing clothes πŸ˜‰

Any such list I do will not be will not be complete without the song… Hawa Hawa e hawa khushbo luta de πŸ˜‰

the chirpy juhi singing for the handsome but stupid aamir… lovely one this

Though this one is there as embed in MM’s comments but I love it so much till date that I cant help but put it here… the pool, naghma, the sexy Sanjay voice…

and then there was kya ada kya jalwe tere PARO oh PARO

do u guys remember the movie baaghi – salman and naghma… i dont know how many times I watched the movie just for its songs… the prostitute and the nice boy romance…

and on the same subject there was Sadak… of the famous pooja bhat and Sanjay baba.. tumhe apna banane ki kasam khaayi hai

Man I can go on and on and on… so I stop here now, this is probably one of the longest post I have ever did and one more song and WP will tell me to stop… so guys go ahead and tell me your list of such songs… write a post, leave it in the comment… lets recall the times and laugh πŸ˜€

Sacrifice

19 Wednesday Aug 2009

Abc Wednesday, Abc Wednesday Round 5, elton john, music

For me its strongly associated with Sir Elton John πŸ™‚

Sacrifice- Just a simple word, I just love this song such beautiful lyrics and he has sang it so well

It’s a humanΒ  sign
When things go wrong
When the scent of her lingers
And temptation’s strong

Into the boundary
Of each married man
Sweet deceit comes calling
And negativity lands

Cold cold heart
Hard done by you
Some things look better baby
Just passing through

And it’s no sacrifice
Just a simple word
It’s two hearts living
In two separate worlds
But it’s no sacrifice
No sacrifice
It’s no sacrifice at all

Mutual misunderstanding
After the fact
Sensitivity builds a prison
In the final act

We lose direction
No stone unturned
No tears to damn you
When jealousy burns

U know when I had heard this song long ago, I used to think… its sacrifice ist a symbol of love… for a long time I used to think these are the lyrics till a friend corrected me lol πŸ™‚ but dont u think these would have been lovely too

Ok by now u its a musical ABC time and today’s alphabet is E…

(SC)Elton_John_Photo

Elton John rather Sir Elton John, I love the way his fingers move on the paino and he has playing the paino since he was 3 and started his career as pianist when he was 15. His first album was Empty Sky however Elton John is known more as his first, the reason being it was realised in the US first.

Its also more popular because it finally made him with “Your Song”

Its also listed in Rolling Stones 500 greatest album of all times. Infact Elton John stands no 6 in the most albums there,5 of his

He was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and knighted in 1998. He has also been fighting against AIDS since a long time.

He was won 5 Grammy awards, 1 academy award, 1 golden globe.

Go on hear some of his best numbers

Can u feel the love tonight

Blessed

Dont go breaking my heart

the tribute to Princess Diana, good bye English Rose

And man do u remember his engagement ring… I could die for it πŸ™‚
