Its a strange and weird time when your childhood icons start passing away. Ghazal Maestro Jagjit Singh passed away day before yeseterday. For me an era ended with him, many many evenings were spent listening to his soulful healing music. Soaking myself into the lyrics that he brought life too. His was one of the music that I grew up on, its a music thats in my soul. Music that will last me a lifetime and in my memories and his music will live the maestro forever. Rest in Peace the ghazal maestro

Today as a dedication to him let me present to you the top 10 ghazals (actually the first ten may be) which are my favorite… ten on tuesday on wednesday anyone?

So the sake of situation lets start with a song which makes most sense here Jeewan kya hai chalta phirta ek khilona hai

And a song we all grew up a song that symbolises him, yes woh kagaz ki kashti yeh baarish ka paani

Next up a ghazal that has lovely nuinaces in it, kal chaudavi ki raat this shab bhar raha charcha tera

Next is a a ghazal which I love for the sheer magic of its lyrics,

Gulshan ki faqt katoon se nahin phoolon se bhi zeenat hoti hai., jeene ke liye is duniya main gham ki bhi zararoot hoti hai

No list about Jagjit Singh can be complete without mentioning the magic he did to Mirza Ghalib poetry… dil hi to hai, Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi

Can anyone forget the magic he created with Insight, specially with Garaj baras pyaasi dharti ko phir paani de maula

He also sang many geet/ghazals in Punjabi…  here is one that I love to listen too Saun da mahina

He also sang a lot of devotional songs.. here are two – a shabd (punjabi bhajan sang in gurudwara)

and the ever famous hey ram hey ram hey ram

And here’s ending with my most favorite Jagjit Singh ghazal, the one that never ever fails to evoke emotions, make me teary eyed… touch my heart somewhere… babul mora naihar chhooto jaye

So tell me whats your favorite

When I saw this post by Shilpa sometime back about JaiHo concert and Rahman, I was taken back to memories when the time when I saw him live and then I went and saw the prompt for today at NaBloPoMo and guess what it is

What are the five best bands you’ve seen play live?

A coincidence? Must be God wanting me to write abt it 😉

Everything I do I do it for u….  What an awesome song that is… And just imagine the man himself, the awesome Bryan Adams singing it for you and to top it all if its the first concert you are going to together as a couple… Its bound to make it in the top 5 list… 😉 I have seen Bryan Adams live twice but the second time was truly divine with N and me holding hands and dancing oblivious to the world around us…. those were the days of early romance and courtship… to our defence most couple around us were behaving the same 😀  sigh those were the days, one of my mostest favorite concert ever

What happens when Zakir Hussain, John McLaughlin, Shankar Mahadevan and Shivmani come together… there is Shakti all around… The band was not truly fully shakti but it was the extended form and what evening that was… If I close my eyes and focus I can still almost hear the symphony that all of them created together… it was nothing less that a musical bonanza

Yeh Daulat bhi le lo, yeh shauhrat bhi le lo mujhko luata do bachpan ka sawan… anyone is his 30’s knows how damn true this is 😉 and almost everyone who knows me, knows how big a Jagjit Singh fan I am (atleast of what a great person he used to be till sometime back)… I have been lucky to seem him live 3 times but its the last time thats most special to me because I took mom along to probably her only concert of life… We bought the second best tickets (the best ones had got over by then) and made her sit in the third row right in front… I saw how much she enjoyed and my enjoyment almost doubled 😀

Comfortably Numb…. one of my most favorite numbers in the whole world…. And Pink Floyd a band I almost worship… I have every album of theirs right on my laptop and in my car and in my CD’s at home… so that if I want to hear them suddenly I always always always have access to them…. So when the band was coming to Bangalore how could I miss it ok to be more precise it was Roger Waters only that came but still it was electrifying to hear Just Another Brick in the wall playing right in front of you….

And that brings us to the man with whom we started the post the God of music himself…. the genius A R Rahman… I think it was 2 may be 3 yrs back when there was a Rahman concert happening in the city, for some stupid reason we ignored it last minute and in the last minute all we could get is the junta Rs 500 tickets and we were quite in number… a big gang of about 10 people I think and to make matters worst it rained like nobodys business that day… The concert as most other concerts in Bangalore was supposed to happen in Palace Grounds and everyone knows how slushy it becomes after a little rain… Very sad we reached there thinking may be the concert will be cancelled but it was on…. There was water all around…. But little did we know the rain will actually turn into our advantage that day… Only about 25% of the people who were supposed to turn up came… and the barricades for the higher value tickets were slowly opened and soon we found ourselves in the Rs 5000 stand… watching the legend himself face to face… Truly Jai Ho 😀

Abc Wednesday, Abc Wednesday Round 5, jagjit singh

I love I just love Jagjit Singh…

His voice has a charisma and feelings that is beyond explanation…. and oh the lyrics that his Ghazals have…. Can never get enough of it…….

How much ever I try I can never ever pick one ghazal which is a favourite

I think the first ever ghazal I heard of his was the very very popular Yeh Daulat bhi le lo

I loved it back then instantly but now when I hear it, every word is like brilliant… I just want my childhood back

ye daulat bhii le lo, ye shoharat bhii le lo
bhale chhiin lo mujhase merii javaanii
magar mujhako lautaa do bachapan kaa saavan
vo kaagaz kii kashtii, vo baarish kaa paanii

muhalle kii sabase nishaanii puraanii
vo budhiyaa jise bachche kahate the naanii
vo naanii kii baaton mein pariyon kaa deraa
vo chahare kii jhuriryon mein sadiyon kaa pheraa
bhulaae nahiin bhuul sakataa hai koi
vo chhotii sii raaten vo lambii kahaanii

kadii dhuup mein apane ghar se nikalanaa
vo chidiyaa vo bulabul vo titalii pakadanaa
vo gudiyaa kii shaadii mein ladanaa jhagadanaa
vo jhuulon se giranaa vo gir ke sambhalanaa
vo piital ke chhallon ke pyaare se tohafe
vo tuutii hui chuudiyon kii nishaanii

kabhii ret ke unche tiilon pe jaanaa
gharaunde banaanaa banaake mitaanaa
vo maasuum chahat kii tasviir apanii
vo kvaabon khilaunon kii jaagiir apanii
na duniyaa kaa gam thaa na rishton ke bandhan
badii khuubasuurat thii vo zindagaanii

Some Trivia from Wiki

Jagjit Singh was born in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. His father Amar Singh Dhiman, a government employee, was a native of the village of Dalla in Punjab (India) and his mother, Bachchan Kaur from Ottallan village, Samrala. He had four sisters and two brothers and he is known as Jeet by his family. He was raised as a Sikh.

He went to Khalsa High School in Sri Ganganagar and then studied science after matriculation at Government College, Sri Ganganagar and went onto DAV College, Jalandhar to graduate in arts. He is a post-graduate in history from Kurukshetra University.

Some Trivia from me : he went to the same college as my dad at the same time and used to live in the street behind them 😉 and yes while we are at it… its Dad’s happy birthday song…. Dad wishing u a very very happy birthday

I so love all ghazals by him that I am really at a loss on which to put here and which not… I have also attended him live 3 times and everytime has been awesome

So u guys tell me do u like him? What are ur favorites and I will put them here 😀
