The Auto Saga

21 Wednesday Sep 2011

autos, bangalore, rants and more

In a ten on Tuesday form on a Wednesday πŸ™‚ abhi thoda belated tou chalta hai na

  1. Bangalore auto drivers are amazing and impartial people they don’t like to hurt anyone so they continuously refuse to go everywhere. After all if they go to place A and not place B, it won’t be fair right? And no I am kidding, ask anyone. I have once asked an auto driver “where will you go, I will go to that place” in as many words because he said no to atleast 10 people in front of me
  2. They also don’t want you to waste too much of your time and hence any distance above 15kms is really not done, but wait lets be fair to them and not go too near too, so there is a minimum distance limit of 5kms. So kindly chose your travels to be anywhere between 5-15km. Anything not falling in this bracket is strictly a passenger’s fault and an oversight in planning the city
  3. Meter, whats that? Its just an evil device forced on them you see and its mandatory to add atleast Rs 25-50 to the amount which comes on it (if at all its used that is) else they will be in such a loss, poor auto drivers
  4. Another thing you must remember about these guys is they don’t believe in keeping change with them, it’s an insult you see so if your bill is not a round figure (note Rs 50 or Rs 100) its your responsibility to give him change and please if you don’t have change, don’t insult the poor man by asking it back so what that it sometimes might even be Rs34 (I have myself been forced to leave this amount once) forget about single digit numbers
  5. They also love bangalore as it used to be u know, the small city comprising or malleshwaram and MG road and frazer town and around. So all new places are really out of the city and hence demand a double meter and this includes areas like outer indira nagar and if u live in Martahahalli or hosur road, god help you. All I can say is “Good Luck”
  6. Somehow in Bangalore I see another huge problem, the poor auto wallas never ever find a savari back you see, whether its a drop in the middle of kormangala or whitefield or even sometime MG road, I think we people of Bangalore must have a sensor which detects that this auto just dropped someone here and hence we shouldn’t take him
  7. There are so many phone applications that these days provide you with shortest distance and some even with the fastest route to a destination, but have you ever seen an application which provides you with the longest possible route,Bangalore has many such walkie talkie applications yes our dear auto driver who else. He knows the longest route from every A to B possible in the city
  8. What its 8 o clock? and what u still are on the roads? its your fault obviously and the poor auto walla has to pay for it now to drop you to your house I say. U better give him atleast the double of what is the meter, even if the rule actually is 1.5 times after 10:00 pm. Auto drivers of Bangalore believe in following nature and not the man made clocks and the natural cycle says 8pm is dark and is night
  9. All auto drivers in Bangalore are slowly getting impressed by their Chennai counterparts and turn promptly to Kannada if there is any confusion whileΒ  interacting. So inspite of living in this city without Kannada for 10 yrs now I feel the need for it. May be they are acting as government agents and helping the govt implement the learn Kannada rule
  10. And last but not the least inspite of everything if you have gone lucky and got an auto, I have only one thing to say “good luck” for two reasons – one you should reach where you have to safely as they really are the most rash drivers on the road and two I pray for your mental peace because they really are an expert in every single thing in Bangalore
  11. And this bonus point for people who are on the other side of auto drivers (including me most of the times). They are also the best friends of car drivers and even better than police in keeping accidents at bay, what confused? Ask any car driver in Bangalore and they will tell you how extra alert they become when they see an auto near their car, after all if an auto is driving in the middle of the lane and going either side every two minutes, you really can’t be anything but alert and I have always been taught “being alert is the best way to avoid an accident” πŸ˜›

This post actually started in my mind after I tweeted saying this because the Mumbai folks were cribbing about their auto drivers and the response I got was am I sure πŸ™‚

Dear Mumbai people I know strike is bad but if u hate ur auto wallahas so much please pass them to #Bangalore we’ll gladly take them

so tell me now folks u think the same πŸ™‚ Trust me having an experience in auto drivers in four major cities in India I think Bombay really has the best auto drivers (it might seem like a case of andhon main kana raja but nonetheless) followed by Delhi (right now) and the only city which probably beats Bangalore is Chenai… so my sympathies with them, may be we can split the mumbai auto wallahs chennai if u promise to share the murugan idlies with me πŸ˜›

bangalore, NaBloPoMo

I want myΒ BangaloreΒ back, Bangalore that I loved, Bangalore that I moved in about 9.5 yrs ago… Bangalore….

  • where there were only two seasonsΒ pleasantΒ and veryΒ pleasant
  • where when you drive down any road a canopy of trees would welcome you with open arms wanting to embrace you with the branches
  • where if it becomes a little hot in the day it would be sure to rain in the evening
  • where come spring and the roads will be lined with colors, lavender, pink, red and yellow
  • where the longest travel time used to be like 20 or 30 minutes to travel across the city
  • where I used to be able to walk to work without getting worried of being hit by 10001 cars and without getting worried of being mobbed or teased
  • where it was possible to party till 4 in the morning remember the pub city?
  • where it was not only possible to party till 4 it was also possible to have a girls night out till 4 and come back home all by yourself
  • where if one feels hungry at midnight there used to be those small dhabhas to go to not just 5 star coffee shops
  • where having Forum was a novelty πŸ˜‰
I want my Bangalore back…. can someone please bring it back for me?
Edited to add : feel free to add to the list please
Edited to add even more : fellow NaBloPoMo’s I will come and comment on ur blogs… just give me a little more time barely able to manage posting these days 😦

Dilli Ki Sardi

27 Monday Dec 2010

bangalore, Delhi, dilli ki sardi, memories, personal, winter food, winters

Some memories are just deep encrusted in ones minds and hearts and one of those memories or a set of memories for me is Delhi Winter. Though its been a little more than 9 years I have moved to Bangalore and started calling it home and slowly loving the city too I sorely miss the Delhi Winters, every December I go into a sad mode when I hear about the winters in Delhi from friends and family.

It reminds me of those early school morning where we would just not be able to get up and dad would be shouting and we just murmring 2 more mins from the warmth of the rajai (quilt)

It reminds me of those lazy lazy afternoons we would spend a dari (rug) spread on the terrace soaking in sun, pretending to study with a book in hand sometimes alone and sometimes chatting with a friend

It reminds me of those times in the winter vacations and sometimes otherwise in the early evenings too when all the aunties of the street will sit together in a corner on a charpai (cot) knitting and exchanging colony gossip and we kids will get a chance to do whatever we wanted to πŸ˜‰

It reminds me of those lovely evenings and nights when we will all get inside the biggest rajai in the house and eat moongfali (peanuts) endlessly and than we would push each other to get out if anything is needed

It reminds me of those fights we would have when we get into a rajai which has been already warmed by someone else πŸ˜‰

It reminds of those morning paranthas and pickle breakfasts and steaming hot besan ka seera to end the day with

It reminds me of that yummy gajar ka halwa and the yummier sarsoon ka saag and the pinni made by mom, those gajaks and gur after every meal

It reminds of my of those morning where you would get up on the terrace to see nothing yeah the fog would have created the zero visibility and it reminds me of that hot cup of boost that dad used to make for us on those days

So last week when we in Bangalore woke up to see a fog similar to what used to be DilliKiSardi… ofcourse we were very happy πŸ˜€

And seeing Ojas as excited about the fog and enjoying his cup of boost watching it, made me even more nostalgic… I guess its true… memories are for a lifetime

An old Church tucked away somewhere in the hills of chickmaglur

And this one is actually a structure in one of the Bangalore buildings, lets see who can identify this…

bangalore, cafe thulp, resturant, review

I normally don’t do a lot of restaurant reviews though I do visit many new ones… only when one of it has left a lasting impression do I write about it, whether they made me very happy with the food or totally pissed me off

Cafe Thulp surely comes in the first category πŸ™‚ Yesterday night me and N were in the mood of eating a burger and Ojas wanted to eat pasta… we were wondering where to go so that we can get both and than Thulp came to my mind… Now I had visited Thulp once before but it was a hurried visit at about 3:30 in the evening and as it was post lunch I just had a lemonade and french fries then with ojas and a friend… I did like the ambience of the place than too.. simple and convenient

So I went there again yesterday all set to sample their food and I was in for a very pleasant surprise because I was certainly not expecting this good food πŸ˜‰ it was yummy…. we ordered corn quesadillas chicken for starters which came with salsa and was one of the yummiest thing I have eaten in the recent times… the salsa was perfect and quesadillas correctly crisp with brilliant filling.

We ordered a tomato cheese chicken pasta and falafel burger (which I was totally amused with, never heard of a falafel burger) for the main course and both the dishes were mindblowing.

The pasta was routine but perfect to the last spice, an authentic italian taste was surely what u got (which didnt really suited Ojas I guess so me and N had the pleasure of gobbling down that too πŸ˜€ ) The burger as I said above was a total surprise I havent really thought of putting a fafalfel in a burger before and after eating it there I am wondering why? with a little humus in place of mayo and lots of raw veggies, it seemed like a healthier version of burger too πŸ˜€

All in all a brilliant meal was had and surprise surprise when the bill came, with a lemonade and the above dishes the bill was still under Rs 500/- which is so rare these days…

In nutshell a place I would surely recommend to all…. I hear they have a delivery branch called Asia in the box and I am waiting for the first opportunity to try that

Food – 4.5/5

Service – 3.5/5

Ambience – 3/5 (its nothing extraordinary but they do have the standard cafe things, games, books etc… what I liked was that they have a section of books and games for kids as well starting from 0+… so thoughtful)

bangalore, city, me me me

act like roman………… And When in bangalore like a Banglorean I have become Banglorean a and I can claim this proudly as

  • I have started to understand that when u ask for directions and are told a circle, it can be anything from a two lane crossing to a 10 lane circle, when u are told dead end it might just be a crossing too πŸ˜‰ and most important I have started understanding the distance that we have to go from the length of straaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaight involved πŸ˜‰
  • I have actually stopped cribbing about Bangalore traffic and accepted it as a part and parcel of the city
  • I by default add a in the end of the words like lefta, righta etc
  • One of my favorite quick eat places are ones which sell Andhra meals
  • When someone cribs about Bangalore I think of it as my duty to talk of the city and give him a firm reply…. howmuch ever I might crib myself
  • That I now can’t probably think of settling in any other city no not even Delhi…. I am in love in love in love with bangalore weather
  • I actually eat idly wada with the orange sambhar
  • I have started blaming us the software engg to spoil the lovely city and make its prices higher
  • I have started to understand the complicated marriage relations….they marry their own mamma’s and sometimes stay in the same house as a one big family
  • I have started keeping ganpati and gauri at home

Thanks Itchy to bring me out of my laziness and prompt me to write this post

So what have u drowned yourselfΒ  in your city?

PS: have u gonbe to Shruti’s post yet… those lovely paintings are waiting for u ………… πŸ™‚

bangalore, india, politics, voting

Yesterday it was BBMP (municipal) election in Bangalore. While me and mil went and voted N couldn’t because he was traveling for some biking fun with the boys.

So yesterday when the maid came in late… I asked her

Vote de aaye?

And then she yes and said this

Haan madam de tou diya but kya fyaada… 20 din se sabko chicken biryani khila raha hai main nahin khaayi, kyonki mujhe usko vote nahin karna… acha nahin hai woh… and aaj subah subah aake blanket, saree and 500 rupiyah diya aur bola vote mujhko hi dena. chalo saath do deke aao… and uske bande sab saath gayee and ushi ko vote dena pada.. kya karoo madam aadmi bhi yahan nahin hai so jaisa bola waise kar diya

Translation : Ya I gave the vote but what good it is. One of the candidates was feeding the whole area chicken biryani in the night she claims she didnt even have one day as he is not a good candidate and she didnt want to vote for him. Then the morning of the voting that guy came and gave her blanket, saree and rs 500 in cash and asked her to vote for her… As her husband is not living (thats a story for another post) she did what she was asked to

I was stunned… I was angry… I mean I know buying votes etc is not a new practice but somehow I never thought it would be existent in a big city like Bangalore. The so called IT city of the country…

Is this voting even worth it? Then I was discussing this with thehrstore on twitter and heΒ said this

@monikamanchanda – Damn! That’s bad. 😦 At least their vote counted. We’ve a number problem here. Glad u voted.

which made me think… true she has atleast voted this way and if she was smart enough she would have taken the money and voted for someone else πŸ˜‰ but then how many people are so fearless and gutsy?

Does this vote really count? What do u think… is it better to not go and vote than to vote for people like this under such circumstances?

bangalore, book, Delhi, Ojas, punjabi, review

both the book and in reality πŸ˜€

I recently read Chetan Bhagat’s 2 states, frankly I am not a his fan apart from his Five Point Somehow I haven’t really liked any book of his and I think five point someone was also good because it was a refreshing change coming out of India on life in Indian university, but I have read all of them may be because the pricing is so right… 95 bucks doesnt really matter if u dont like the book does it πŸ˜€

img_book_4_2So when 2 states was released I picked it up and specially because the plot seems so close to my real life πŸ˜‰ and I must say this is probably his best book… Its not a literary masterpiece but then I dont think he even attempts to make one…

There is a fresh feel to the book which I think is very important for any writer because the last two of his books almost felt like the previous ones but the freshness is back here…

The humor in the book is brilliant ofcourse he has over done a little at times but probably that is needed to bring the masala in…

Its a topic on which enough movies have been made and enough books written yet Bhagat’s novel’s brings in some novelty to it and the way he has brought out the characteristics of both the communities is just wow!!!

There were so many times when I was laughing out aloud and nodding my head πŸ˜‰ the loud boisterous punju’s and the always pretending to be intellectual tams πŸ˜€ and the climax the last 50 pages of the book… they are the best and frankly that is so rare because most of the time the writer is confused at the climax… ofcourse its the usual marriage boy meets girl but the way its done… if u have ever been to a cross cultural marriage u will know it!!! It could almost recall my wedding when my relatives were complaining what a boring set of people sitting quietly and doing pooja and N’s relative were shocked when all we needed is a DJ and drinks

All in all I think its worth a read specially at Rs. 95….I finished in about 4 hrs flat…

And I am delhi and a all of us having a blast…This was Ojas’s first flight with a single parent infact this is his first trip with single parent… I was scared as hell damn its so difficult to make him sit for 2.5 mins forget about 2.5 hours πŸ˜‰ but the kingfisher air hostess were darlings and their inflight entertainments Pingu show a boon πŸ˜€ the flight was a breeze

One incident that happened on the flight

There was a girl of almost the same age as Ojas and she was crying a lot in the flight, some 2 times Ojas said baby crying and I told him dont worry she will be fine and then he suddenly got down from my lap walked upto the girl and said “What happened baby no cry” and gave her a kiss… πŸ˜‰

and did I tell u there is nothing better than ma ke haath ka khaana πŸ˜€

So whats up with u guys?
