Ladoo for the Elephant God

28 Friday Aug 2009

coconut, condesed milk, festivals, gur, jaggery, ladoo, recipe, sesame, til

Ganesha is known for his love for food and specially Ladoos and modak. So this Friday I share two ladoos that I made for my Ganesha

Til/Sesame Ladoos

Ingredients

  • 250gms white sesame seeds
  • 150 gms jaggery (there is a one available which is dark if u get that even better, I couldnt get it this year)
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder

Method

  • Dry roast the sesame seeds till they turn light brown
  • After the seeds cool down a little grind them
  • Mix jaggery, cardamom powder and the grinded sesame seeds
  • Make ladoos out of it

They are just yummilicous but very high on calorie and also in heat… so should be avoided in hot weather

DSC06014

Coconut Ladoos

These are very easy but extremely delicious, they have been on my best and easy to make sweets for a long time now

Ingredients

  • 3 cups desiccated coconut
  • 1 cup condensed milk
  • 1 tbsp chopped cashew nuts
  • 1 tsbp raisins

Method

  • Mix 2.5 cups of desiccated coconut, condensed milk, cashew nuts and raisins together
  • Refridgrate for 30 mins
  • make equal size ladoos and roll in the left over desiccated coconut so that it covers the ladoos

DSC06001

Avanti I will post a snack recipe next week, Sols hopefully u can use that for Peanut’s kindergarden also :). Man I feel like a famous cook, people asking me for recipe’s ๐Ÿ˜€

PS: I am off to N’s village for the weekend to have total fun… yippeee

Goodbyes are always tough

ganesha, ganesha pooja, Ojas, sweets

Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival I have started to love though its a festival we never celebrated at our house. My association with the Elephant God started after getting married.

Mil used to keep ganesha at home but past 4 years it was always like yes Ganesha is there, morning u say a few prayers eat some sweets the mil made and evening come back home and the Ganesha will be gone as she would have done the visargan the same day.

This time though because I was at home we decided to do it properly and the Ganapati handover to me officially happened ๐Ÿ™‚

DSC05971_c

my small ganpati at home, kept at height to save from Ojas as Abha says even God need protection from kids, I was so particular I wanted a Ganesha which had no paint on it and wanted the same gauri too, though I got the Ganesha but still didnt the Gauri like that inspite of searching for 5 hours and 15 shops in Bangalore.

With the diya lighted

DSC05986

5 days were spent in absolute joy, making various delicacies, til ladoos, the traditional rice and coconut filling modaks, motichor ladoos, pyasam, puran poli, sooji ka halwa, milk modak, malupua and then because we had run out of ideas I started innovating and made Apple-Cocunut Kheer, Rasgulla Kheer (simpler form of rasmalai)

Today evening I bid Ganpati Bappa goodbye today with a heavy heart and there were bucket full of tears while doing it, if u are thinking they were mine… naah they were Ojas he simply refused to let the elephant God go… “ganesha keep home” was repeated over and over again and after they were gone “Ganesha bring” happened for a loooong time. So there he learnt his first lesson in life. Goodbyes are always difficult.

Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na karo

Abc Wednesday Round 5, farida khanum, flute, ghazal

F is for Flute

2flutes2

I love flute as an instrument, it has a capability of churning out the most melodious and soothing music on one side and going to a really sexy beat on the other.

Its also a instrument associated with Lord Krishna.

A relaxing calm spiritual flute

The magic Pandit Hari Prasad Chuarisia creates with flute is amazing, I always get so much peace when I hear him, see the following video to belive it, the magic between tabla and flute is amazing

And who can forget the famous Hero number with the flute.

And then there is one more song, which was very popular number in the pubs about 2 years back and had a fantastic flute tune. Ok u guys which one was it?

F is also most definitely for Farida Khanum. I adore her voice. The way she has sung Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na karo… I can hear it over and over again

Another one of hers I truly love

PS: I still have top reply to the comments of the last 2 days, will do it soooon

Update Week 6

25 Tuesday Aug 2009

Weight loss, Weight loss update

Actually 5.5 ๐Ÿ™‚ Yes I didnt do a post last week, it was not missed rather I have decided to do it alternate week and I eventually want to move to once a month and then hopefully stop too because the target having being met ๐Ÿ˜€ when will that happen is a different story all together

Intial Weight : 94.3 kgs

Last Update Weight : 89.25 kgs

This Update Weight : 87.45 kgs

2 weeks weightloss : 1.8 kgs

Total Weighloss : 6.9 kgs

Also there is a 2-inch loss at the waist and 1-inch overall and that is making me super happy ๐Ÿ™‚

Though I am happy with the total weightloss I am not really happy with the last two weeks, its less than a kg/week. There were various reasons though:

1. My birthday where I ODed on food

2. Ganesh chaturtathi I controlled myself hard and had almost zero sweets, I am actually impressed with myself. I am making sweets two times a day for the ganesha prasadam but only eat them as prasad just a pinch each time

3. I think this is the biggest no gymming for 1 week because I slipped on stairs and hurt my back and twisted my ankle.

I am actually that this whole thing is working out for me, touchwood. And if I think of reasons its the people around me, my DC and instructor. She Both of understood me well… they push me enough but dont try to be too controlling of me. I hate anyone who tries to use authority with me even if its for my own good, yes I am stubborn that way and now I am worried because I am planning to work out in my colony gym and I hate the instructor there.

I am thinking may be I will go do the basic cardio there and then start doing the XBX at home and that is where I need input from you guys, anyone of u done it? I know sraikh and goofy u have done it. Any tips you would like to share?

Or another exercises that you think I can do myself at home or in the gym to keep the weight loss going?

A Big Thank U from the honest me

blogging, friends

The kind of love one can get from the blog sphere of the blog-samaj is unimaginable. I was surely expecting some good words when when I did the last post announcing my completion of 300 posts and asking your valuable words, but what I was not prepared was such a heartwarming response. Your comments touched me, made me so happy that I had tears of happiness in my eyes…

Guys u rock!!! and the honest me in the tittle read on to know most of u seem to think I am very honest which is really so good to know…

Thank u guys hugs and muah…

Poppy says –

“Your bindaas style of writing posts, the way you write about everything and anything under the sun! Although I started out hanging at the ojas blog, I find myself drawn here more often these days !

Congratulations, and yes itโ€™s great knowing you!”

Puneet says (and no I am not linking Vandana’s blog here ๐Ÿ˜€ )

“300 posts whats the big dealโ€ฆ.
well this is an achievement which shows the perseverance, enthu and enjoyment in a task. If I can relate this milestone to hitting a triple century in cricketing terms(hitchy dont be too critical here ..this is just too boost Monika) than you can understand its worth with the fact that even great batman of Sachin Tendulkar calibre has not hit a single one in so many years. Reaching this in 3 years in spite of being completely away from blogs for almost 8-9 months due to maternity, speaks your urge /impulsion/crave itself. You have so much to say to the world, I would have made you an official spokesperson of my political party if I ever start one. Surely there will be 99% quota for women in that :-)

On your posts, hmmm wellโ€ฆyou write something sensible sometimes :-) atleast.. Were you expecting some kind of praise from me ..I donโ€™t think so :-) โ€ฆbut one thing I can say safely If someone wants to know about you (s)he mustnโ€™t try too much, should just read your posts only, They are true reflections of your beingโ€ฆ.personaโ€ฆ

Knowing you personally does not give any edge(for black mailing ofcourse) over some one know you blogaally :-) keep it up”

My namesake Monika says

“I love your honesty Monika & feel a genuine warmth here. Also, u r a fun person & that relects in your interests. And now that I think we are friends, I canโ€™t think of missing a single post of yours.

Congrats on the 300th. Keep going.”

Pixie with her angelic dust says

“Happy 300th post my dear! :)

I enjoy your writing. simpleโ€ฆ that made me come back to your blog to read more!

Though now, I come more for you and to spam your comments section!!
*evil laughter*

I remember de-lurking on the monthly marathon you were trying out โ€“ 1 post per day (i think)
And since I had met you once, I found that you were quite put together and articulate and intelligent, though we didnโ€™t interact too much that day :)

Your writing reflected all of that. It also showed you as a warm friendly soul always ready to jump into any dance form on any blog in our precious samaj!! :) :)

Talking to you has shown me that you are indeed all of that and more! :)
You have a naughty side well!! :P
I completely adore Ojas and love reading about him at your other blog!
Though this is where I love to comment and pull your leg and spam!!! :D :D

Hugs!

Keep โ€˜em coming!! :D
the posts I mean! ;)“

Prats says

“Well what I like about this blogโ€ฆInteresting question and I have multiple reasons.
You wonโ€™t believe, I was talking to a friend and was telling her how I admired this blog and this what I said-

โ€œI love reading Monikaโ€™s blog, not because of the literature but because of the personality. The blog when written communicates to you directly and reading for some time you know the face of the blog is one which cares and genuinely does so for its readers. This kind of genuineness is actually missing in lot bloggers who might have fan followings in millions and should never be ignored, cause it is so rare.โ€

Well so for now I would just quote myself (Narcissist I am) so keep writingโ€ฆ.”

IHM says

“But first, CONGRATULATIONS on your 300th post!

And on completing three years in the blogosphere :)
Okay so I got to know you around an year agoโ€ฆ in August 2008 (just checked). I like your blog because I like your views, I think you are a fun, and it shows in your blog postsโ€ฆ but you are also sensitive, and caring. And yet bold and independent. You love life, and you believe in Live and let live and you also have guts and josh to fight when required, loved your posts during th PCC. Particularly loved a comment of your where you have written you seriously considered adopting a baby :)
Love your travelblog and the life of your darling Prince โ€ฆ I enjoy reading about the handsome Prince Ojas :) Will be back with moreโ€ฆ”

Hitchy aka dhiru bhai says

“Why do I come here.. ?

first and foremost reason Its you Monu my friend !!!!!!!!!!! :)

I dont have any reasons when i try to think ofโ€ฆ whyโ€ฆ your just my friend simpleโ€ฆ a part of my lifeโ€ฆ sorry but i have no more reasonsโ€ฆ :D :D I dont need any eitherโ€ฆ !! I m gonna keep coming !!!!! FOREVER !!

bout your blogโ€ฆ

I remember one of the earliest post of yours I read was that Tatti tales from your doctorโ€ฆ !!!! ROFL still even thinking about how you wrote that post makes me laughโ€ฆ !! thats the first time I laughed aloud on a blogโ€ฆ that was in the very beginning when I had just begunโ€ฆ !!! ever since I have had you on my blog roll and I have been visitingโ€ฆ :D

Your Omchillaโ€™s are now a common preparation in my eggโ€™s recipe !!!!! :D :D :D

I can vouch no oneโ€ฆ not even you would have made as many Om chillaโ€™s since that postโ€ฆ though my wife is probably on the look out for you to ask you why you posted that recipeโ€ฆ she is now bored of itโ€ฆ !! and i cant get enoughโ€ฆ !!

I love the way you do tags.. and I thing the first tag i got was from youโ€ฆ and I love doing them just like you.. !!

Yours is a warm place its modern tooโ€ฆ its funny tooo , its thoughtful too and sensible and sensitive tooโ€ฆ its everything one can hope to beโ€ฆ and hence I am here alwaysโ€ฆ !!!!!

butโ€ฆ

only 300 in 3 years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats a performance below par.. pull up your socks will yaโ€ฆ ! reallyโ€ฆ you got some tall people to levelโ€ฆ (ME) !!!! :D :D :P :P :P

PS โ€“ and you even mentioned me coming and all the fun starting !!!!!!!! waah waahโ€ฆ i m thrilled to bits !!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D :D

baaki sab paani kumโ€ฆ !!!!! he he he โ€ฆ

Bhagoooooooooooo

PPS โ€“ good thing you moderated commentsโ€ฆ it gives original ideas rather than reading other commentors and copying.. !! :D :D :D“

The lovely Tara says

“you had me smiling with that last line of the post :)

you are someone full of life, energy, enthusiasm and the determination to make it happen. I know from your posts that you bring with you a positive vibe that lightens up the environment.. and what I like about you is you dont pretend, I mean when u are happy, it shows and when u are sad, that shows too.. there is no trying to please or pretending to smile kind of thing with you.. I like ppl who are comfortable in their skin and who spread cheers around :) I see a lil bit of my sister and a lil bit of her SIL in you and I love both of themโ€ฆ this might be one more reason I am around here :)

and then you cook up such nice recipes :P what elseโ€ฆ thats it i guess..

and hey, congratulations for 300.. may you enjoy it here for long enough..
cheers
:)“

Abha the girl with a lovely smiles says

“ooh! congrats girl!! thats indeed a huge milestone!

me come to read everything you write. be it recipes, current affairs or the fun way you do your tags in! me like your blog!

hugs ans hereโ€™s to many more!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

cheers!”

Shilpa says

“I love that you are so honest in your writing. Whether it is about cooking, about your son, about your husband or about the weightloss. You are honest and you mean what you write. I come back everyday to read your thoughts and your ideas AND YOUR RECIPES. I also felt your pain when you blogged about your health and your weight gain and wanted to hug you and let you know that you are an amazing woman who will get what she wants. I loved your birthday post. I love to see your smiling face in my comments too! Heres to many more 300s!”

Smitha says

“Congratulations, Monika! Over 3 years! Wow, that is an achievement!

โ€˜When I started blogging it was an impulse and for a long time was just blogging with hardly any interactions, then started the interactions and comment exchange and then hitchy came and made that the real fun!!!โ€™ โ€“ Agree totally :)
I know I would have got bored had it not been for the interactions with other bloggers, which make it so much fun and so special!

What do I like about your blog โ€“ I love the way you write.. All your posts are honest, from the heart posts. And yes, I love the recipes you put here too :)“

Reema says

“300????? :O I am still at 190 :) congrats!”

Vandana says

“Congrats!!

Thats a remarkable feat indeed..”

Vinod Sharma says

“Congrats Monika. A triple century is no mean feat. Let us see many more triples. All the best!”

The darling goofy says

“Congrats! 300โ€ฆ wow! Way to go Mon. I think I come to your blog because I connect to you at some level, and that makes it like catching up with a friend, when I read your blog. Besides, your enthusiasm is so clearly visible on the blog, that it is addictive to come back and get enthused.:)”

Don Solilo says

“Congratulations, Monix! 300 posts and 3 years. WOW!

I commented on your post long back on blogspot when you wrote about your โ€˜tatti talesโ€™. I still laugh just thinking about it. Then I think I forgot about your blog. I wasnโ€™t much into bloghopping then. I donโ€™t remember when I became regular on your blog but whatever the reason is, it is good. :)

You seem fun to be around, straight forward and bevdiโ€ฆa lot like me. If we were in same college, we would be good pals. Now that is enough for me to be a regular on your blog. Keep writing! and do see that doctor again for a new tale. Ha..ha..ha..”

“waah waah mubarakan!”

Vishesh says

“ha congrats :) Why do I readโ€ฆhmmโ€ฆI havenโ€™t read enough of your blog to say that yet..but there is something which does make me read it :)“

” Happy 300 posts Monika. Congratulations on the milestone. Kinda reminds of that movie โ€˜300โ€ฒ. You blog is something like that movie, unique and exceptional, of strength and resolve (w.r.t. your weight loss regime and posts).

Congrats again and wish you a few more multiples of 300s!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

Cheers.”

D says

“I come to read you for your enthusiasm and verve for life :)”

Sue Says

“Reason I come back again? Because this blog is like a friend, very innocent and trustable. Whatever you say, you get a response without fail, which is not very common in blogosphere, especially when the blogger gets more popular. That way, you are an awesome host, taking great care for your guests.

Kudos to you and even though I donโ€™t comment everyday (because I read blogs from my mobile everyday and itโ€™s challenging to make comments), I shall be counting upto the 500th post, pretty soon.”

Neha says

” ๐Ÿ˜ณ How did I miss this post?? ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Sowwy!
And Congratulations! I like your blog coz its honest, from the heart, and I love your headers too ๐Ÿ™‚ “

Thank u all for ur super comments, I love u… U all make my life as colorful as this post.

Congrats!!

Thats a remarkable feat indeed..

tangytuesday

Scene 1:

3:00 am – a girl quietly gets up so that she doesnt disturb anyone, steps into the bathroom for a early morning shower. Gets ready, does her morning Sehri, reads namaz and sleeps again

Scene 2:

6:30 am – another girl gets up, takes bath so that she is fresh to please her Gods, quitely sips her morning cup of tea and gets busy in cooking the various sweets, makes a flower rangoli in the entrance of the house, decorates the place where her friend Ganesha will reside for next 3 days.

Scene 3:

7:30 am – another lady gets ready with a lovely saree and flowers in her head and does her sunday round of the Church, lights a candle and brings one home.

9:00 am – the first, second and the whole family along with the third girl do the pooja for Ganapati. The candle that the third lady brought is also lighted in the pooja room.

The first girl and third lady are my live-in help and house maid respectively and yes the second girl is me.

My live in is a person who keeps fasts during Ramdan though she is a hindu by birth and she broke her Roja in the evening by the Ganpati Pooja prasad.

I cant tell you how proud I was of my household yesterday. It seemed to be my wish for India coming true, if only this whole thing could prevail all over. Why cant we have all the religions existing everywhere together.

Yes I did have problems in this intially, when my maid told us that she wants to keep roja, my mother-in-law did not take to it well but me and N sat with her and reasoned that what is the problem? Just because you have someone of another religion in you house does that make your own belief less stronger and till ones own belief is strong enough I dont think it matters what is happening, God is within oneself after all.

Then came a point where she was like ok she can keep the fast but she will not do namaz here and she will not enter the pooja room and this is a point where I gave me, no hypocrisy in my house. Either she stays here be normals as she is.. or we just let her go and after lots of debate and convincing my mil let her do keep the fast and I respect her for this. Its really difficult for the people from that generation to accept and I am glad an proud that she did.

So it was a sunday for all religions in the house hold and yes I made the visit to the Gurudwara to mark the last end of the sqaure.

It might sound cliche but “hindu muslim sikh issai indeed bhai bhai”

Amem!!

PS: thanks for all those heart warming comments in the previous post, that post is the next I promise

Announcing Friday Feast

So the verdict is out, The results I got by the poll were almost equal and left me even more confused. And man which one of you voted for the last option, sigh because someone did ๐Ÿ™‚

I really like Sol’s idea though and I am going to start a Friday Feast series here and see how it goes. So every Friday I will take you down the culinary road and try to make you drool and motivated enough to go to the kitchen ๐Ÿ™‚

And today I present to you the Baked Omelette.

Some days back I was chatting with Goofy and she told she is heading to the kitchen to make baked omelette, a recipe that she had seen on a show, I liked the idea a lot and while I was on a diet kept looking for an opportunity when I could make it and then came my birthday and I made it for breakfast, everyone in the house really loved it and for a change even Ojas gobbled it down

Ingredients

  • 4 egss
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 chopped tomato
  • 1 finely chopped capsicum
  • 1 cup grated cabbage
  • 1 cup grated cheese
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried rosemary
  • 3-4 jalapeno peppers
  • 1 tsp milk
  • salt, chilli flakes, pepper and Tabasco to taste

Method

  • Beat the eggs well along with the milk, adding milk to the eggs makes them more fluffy and the dish comes out softer
  • Add all the other ingredients apart from cheese and Tabasco mix well
  • Pour in a baking dish
  • Bake in a preheated at 200 degrees for about 4 mins till the eggs are about half done
  • Spread the cheese and sprinkle Tabasco on top now and put it back in the oven for aboutย  5 more mins or till the eggs are done and the cheese nicely melted
